How To Create An e-Book

A few weeks ago I was asked to create a video showing “How To Create An e-Book” by a member at Blogging Beginners.

Easy enough I thought. Quick video showing me using Word and then pdf995 to turn the document into a pdf.

How wrong can you be? After the first few minutes I realised it was going to be a little more complex than I first thought. Rather than just record what I was doing – my first inclination – I decided to sit and think a while about what someone who has never created an e-book would really want.

nerdwiz2The more I thought the more I realised I needed to be a magician to provide an easy answer to the question.

What experience does the individual have?

What do they know about?

Have they thought about their market and what’s already available?

Do they know what the objective is for the e-book?

What technical skills do they possess?

Do they have the right equipment?

What about book layout; inserting images, text boxes, bullets, hyperlinks…

How about editing and proof reading

And what to do with the finished product? How do you upload to a blog and integrate with an opt-in box and Autoresponder?

After the first hour of thinking and mapping out the video I knew I had a problem! I could never cover all that in one short video.

So a simple request turned into a full blown project.

Now an e-book and 6 videos later I’m finished and here’s where I need some help.

Blogging Beginners members get access to everything as part of their membership – you’ve probably seen the videos already but if not just login here to get immediate access.  Non members, however, only get access to the e-book itself that was the subject of the videos.

What I’d really like, if you’d be so kind, is to leave a comment below if you’ve: – bookbox

1) Read the book

2) Watched the videos

3) Done both

Tell me what you think – honestly. What I need to know is whether everything makes sense.

Is there anything left out that you think should be included?

Is everything pitched at the right level?

Do the book and videos compliment each other?

What could be improved?

I’m not on an ego trip (indeed I may wish I hadn’t asked the question if you all hate the work done!) but as I created everything I was thinking whether I should make a stand alone product to sell to non-members that would include the videos.

I’d really welcome your opinion – if I just launched into this I could have a pile of unread “How To Create An -e-Book” pdfs lying around simply because I hadn’t got to know the market.

Now where did I hear that? :)

    Wizzer,

as a co-author of three ebooks in the past I must hand it to you for venturing into the “how to” part of it.

It must of been quite the undertaking…I can only imagine. Actually creating an ebook is a blast and I highly suggest it if you have a great product or idea that you know will have an interest and audience. (this is key!)

In my case I did not own the ebooks but I still got to help create them and I get to enjoy a portion of their sales yr. after yr. etc.

I have not read your ebook or viewed the videos but if they are anything like other things you have produced, I’m certain they are worthy of a “high 5!”

I will read it and watch the videos and report back. If I can “Do It Now,” I will!

An idiot knows no fear :)

I didn’t intend to do this but it seemed a good idea at the time and was in fact great fun. I’d really enjoyed doing it. (It did delay a video about Squidoo, however, that I’m working on right now – sorry)

Thanks for your comment as always – look forward to hearing what you think, particularly since you’ve experienced creating your own books.

I have read the e-Book three times. Watched the videos two times. And there are a couple I need to go back and watch again.

I am compiling my thoughts as I type and of course will let you know what I think as I think I am one of those responsible for your project. WHO ME???

But for an overall comment. I do believe there will be a completed ebook offered on my website in the near future.

Great work Mark! The combination of e-Book and videos are great! Denise

Great job Mark! I have read the ebook and viewed the videos and it looks like creating an ebook may not be that difficult after all.

Of course this is due to the fact that you did a good job in explaining the various tasks in the videos.

At some point in the future, I will create an ebook following your instructions. In the meantime, I need to really think about an area or subject that I really enjoy and figure out if there is an audience for the subject matter.

Thanks for providing us with all this good information Mark!

Hi Diana, really glad you found the information helpful. Getting the right subject is vital. First – if no one is interested in it you’ll have a great book but if nobody ever reads it… Second – you’ll find it so much harder to write anbout something that you don’t know too well of have to do masses of research on before you start. You’ve truly read the mind of a non-techy blogger and provided a realistic solution for a long-dragged problem.I think this will probably be a pioneering step towards successful blogging career. Thanks Mark for thinking of bringing such very helpful educational materials.
