I know a guy that got paid $100 for just 5  minutes “work” – when he was only 17 and 18…

He simply installed PHP scripts (basically WordPress plugins) and charged 100 dollars a time. He could do this because he knew and applied “this” one secret…

In fact I can’t think of anyone who hasn’t had a big problem at some stage when their computer has crashed or maybe the power supply or mother board has failed and they’ve lost data they were working on. And regardless of how good WordPress is there are always ocassions when something goes wrong, maybe an incompatible plugin or an upgrade that doesn’t quite go to plan and the site sems to vanish.

It’s happened to me and it WILL happen to you one day. If it hasn’t happened to you yet count yourself very lucky. You are extremely fortunate as you can do something now to protect yourself BEFORE you get caught out.

After you recover from the sick feeling in your stomach you start to work out what you need to do to get your site live again. I promise you, this can take hours of searching around for the solution. If you’ve ever suffered from WordPress “white screen” you’ll know how difficult it is to find the solution. People everywhere tell you they’ve had the problem but very few have any answers.

But what if you knew you had a perfect back-up of your site that could be reinstated with a simple click or two?

Ever wanted to move from one server to another? I know a number of our members at Blogging Beginners have wanted to do this as they were unhappy with the service offered by their hosting company. With Backup Creator you can move your whole site – with all plugins and settings AND you don’t need to have any technical knowledge to do it.

I’m in the process of revamping and updating this site – Wizzersays – and this brilliant  WordPress Backup plugin will ensure I don’t have any problems – even if something goes wrong.

I’ve tried other back up solutions in the past but they mainly help with the wordpress databases and not the whole site.

Don’t leave it to chance, whether you follow this recommendation or not, please ensure you regularly back-up your sites – the feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when something goes wrong and you realise you don’t have a recent back-up is just plain horrible.

WordPress 2.7.1 is available! Please Update Now

Easy enough to deal with you’d think.

Just click the Please Update Now link and then the Upgrade Automatically button.

Or so you’d think.

I tried – saw it was unpacking.

Man, that thing must have been on a long holiday the amount of unpacking that seemed to be going on!

And then I strated to wonder. It clearly wasn’t doing anything.

After some deep thinking – yes I can do that sometimes – I realised that the WP Automatic Upgrade plugin I have installed and still activated must be causing a conflict.

Deactivating the old plugin did the trick and the WordPress 2.7 automatic upgrade that’s part of WordPress now did it’s job.

This time it was clearly just an overnight visit!

What is really cool about this plugin is that it gives much greater control over your formatting – much like a word processing program.

For example I can change the standard font to Comic Sans for example just by highlighting and selecting the required font.

I can change it’s size and colour and add a smilie or 2

And what about some quotations?

Insert a custom character or two:  € <

So if you’re fed up with having little control over your posts give this plugin a try.

The video below is merely the item I used to demonstrate how to insert a video into a blog although if you are into music you may want to take a look at where I was in Blip.fm – it’s a good way to get to know people with similar tastes – it’s bit like Musical Twitter!

I recently created a video for Blogging Beginners that demonstrated the use of a Favicon plugin that I’ve been using for some time on a number of blogs. You know – make yourself stand out from the crowd by branding your RSS feed and the address bar etc.

One of the thoughts I had when filming the video was that many beginners just wouldn’t know how to go about creating an icon to use in the plugin or would have to fork out cash to get one made for them.

This morning I found another Favicon Plugin that resolves that problem as it comes pre-loaded with a wide range of icons that can be used until you are ready or able to create your own.

It follows the usual pattern – download, unzip, ftp to site and activate. At that point there is a slight deviation from the norm in that you have to register with an email address for the plugin to work.

Don’t worry, I’ve used other plugins from these guys and they aren’t too bad with the emails they send out. Once you’ve given your email address they’ll send you the usual “opt-in” confirmation at which stage you’ll be taken to a sales page. Frankly I don’t know what it was for – I just scrolled to the bottom and clicked No Thanks.

The plugin then works – all you need to do is go to it from your admin area – select the icon you want to use from those shown and the job’s done.

If you don’t like any of the icons provided there are links to obtain more or you could always create your own and upload it to the “icons” folder.

If you subscribe to the WizzerSays RSS feed you’ll see how I can easily add some text, links, social bookmarking buttons to every post that is distributed by RSS.

This can be changed as often as you want which gives you great control over your customer / visitor communications.

One of the MOST IMPORTANT uses of the Ozh Better Feed Plugin for marketers is the ability to add a download link in the footer of your feed. Normally it is very difficult to find a way of providing RSS subscribers with a download link. If you put it in your post any casual visitor gets access – if you have a standard email subscription may people just won’t sign up.

With RSS because it’s less obtrusive your sign up rates should be higher and you can reward those subscribers by adding a download link in the RSS feed. Obviously only those subscribed to the RSS feed will see it. Outstanding.

My signature has since change as it is updated automatically if the template signature is amended.

I used Microsoft Frontpage to create the signature then simply copied the html code and posted it into the AddSig plugin.
